The Housing Connection (THC) has been offering vital services to disabled people in Australia since it was first established in 1981. The organization was founded by a group of parents of disabled kids and others who were passionate about the cause. This founding group recognized the need for community based support services for disabled people, including those adults who have mental disabilities. The group was able to gain pilot funding to set up a home for those adults who are in need of behavioral support.
This 24 hour supported accommodation facility for mentally disabled adults was structured from the beginning to focus on the provision of support and training to help these adults develop skills that would enable them to live more independent lives. The ultimate goal was to help many of these clients transition out of the supported accommodations to independent housing.
By 1988, the supported accommodation facility was providing 24 hours support for 4 clients who had moderate mental disabilities. During this year the facility also helped 4 more people to move into independent living situations, and in the following year The Housing Connection was formalized into its current concept by Parents and Relatives for the Implementation of Services (PARIS).
This group restructured the organization to respond to several pressing needs which they identified in coordination with an Action for Citizens with Disabilities sub committee. One of the findings of the PARIS research team was that people with disabilities were in most need more access to supported accommodation facilities, so PARIS applied for government funding to expand the capacity of their accommodation facility.
